Dr. Contact Lens - Core Business Application Development
A great vision
Dr. Contact Lens aimed to allow patients to order directly from their doctor's office. It shall sync with patients EMRs so they can order in 1 easy click. Intended to get rid of complex verification processes or wasting insurance benefits. A win-win for doctors and patients. It shall offer a hassle free possibility to get the contacts the next day.
Challenge
Asamblo needed to create a platform from scratch including the underlying architecture and modular environment to enable the new DCL solution. The platform must easily integrate with several lens vendors in order to facilitate the purchase to customers.
Asamblo was urged to become the associate IT Team, achieving a quick growth scaling of the entire solution and all its requirements.
Solution
Asamblo created an API to sync the prescriptions issued to patients with several EMR (Electronic Medical Records).
The cloud based architecture allows now thousands of transactions per minute.
Patients derived by a number of professionals can be invited and just need to create a password to submit their purchase orders with the corresponding prescription.
DCL has integrated so far a number of lens vendors enabling a direct sale process to patients and reducing the final price considerably.
We were able to create a continuing improvement process for implementation, increasing the speed of resolution, from the initial request of any new features to its deployment in production.
Results
We have helped DCL to consolidate a complete functional platform throughout agile working iterations. This enabled the business to quickly adapt to high demand circumstances such as COVID-19.
Statistics
+1 one year since launch
+100 new subscribed optometrists
+3,500 purchase orders processed
+35,000 synced patients

Baluwo - iOS & Android Hybrid App redesign and relaunch
The App offered a safe way to cover family´s needs in Africa remotely buying directly online basic food items, construction materials, prepaid electricity or mobile top-up for the user's relatives and friends a their home country.
Baluwo originally launched an Android version as the only release. Once the revenue phase has been reached, they decided a broader platform strategy should be implemented along with the newest features needed.
Asamblo analized all case needs, the available budget, the time constrains, and recommended an hydrid framework as the core environment to give support to the entire evolution of the new product. This way project scope and possibilities had been clearly enhanced in terms of budget, output quality, manpower cost savings, and time to market in the two major marketplaces, Android and iOS.
The App main objective is to make easy to provide basic essentials remotely.
Sending money is not always the solution. Most of the times, user wants to have control and save money while helping his family and friends back home.
With Baluwo users will be able to aid selected beneficiaries remotely, by simply submitting funds or purchase goods on their behalf on the associate stores.
- Food: user can easily buy basic food items such as rice, sugar, cooking oil, onions, etc. and the beneficiary collects them at the nearest local store all over The Gambia, Mali, Nigeria, and Senegal.
- Construction materials: building a house back home is one of the biggest projects for many african migrants.
- Prepaid electricity: Baluwo bring users a better way to buy electricity for their family (Nawec, Senelec, Woyofal, EDM, BEDC, EEDC). In some cases users can also pay electricity bills through Baluwo App.
- Mobile top-up: Users are able to credit and top-up their fanilies mobile phones. Baluwo works with all phone companies in Gambia, Senegal, Nigeria, Mali, Morocco, Guinea Bissau, Ghana and Sierra Leone including.

Please describe your company and your position there.
I'm the Chief Commercial Officer of a digital marketing company.
For what projects/services did your company hire asamblo, and what were your goals?
We hire Asamblo for the development of a mobile app that works on specialized devices on Android. This application had to capture barcode information and integrate with other offline external components.
In addition, we had to develop the system that captures the information obtained by the devices and achieve an improvement in the inventory taking process of a minimum of 60% of the time it took until then, being carried out manually.
How did you select asamblo and what were the deciding factors?
We found Asamblo through a recommendation. We chose them because of the good proposal they did.
Describe the scope of work in detail, including the project steps, key deliverables, and technologies used.
For frontend development we implement our design by using React Native, against endpoints developed on API’s in PHP 7.3. All endpoints were documented and tested using the Swagger tool.
For the mobile application, we use Android Studio 3 on Kotlin and SqlLite for handling the offline data, which are then synchronized through endpoints with Token security.
How many people from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?
There were 4 people in the dev team, including 2 mobile developers, 1 backend dev and 1 project leader.
Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?
We work together with the team creating the tool Indepo, which allows you to eliminate the spreadsheets from the inventory taking process and let you perform the counting by scanning the barcodes of the products. This tool reduces the inventory taking process by up to 80%. It also allows real-time monitoring of the process and is compatible with any ERP.
We also developed InStock, the mobile application that works together with Indepo, which allows scanning of barcodes from any Android device. You can use a specialized handheld or any cell phone by connecting a wireless barcode reader using an OTG cable.
Describe their project management style, including communication tools and timelines.
The project communication was great, they always met the deadlines without gap. We used Skype, GitLab, Slack, and emails.
What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?
The whole team works flexibly. They are not only concerned with generating code, but with generating a solution for the customer. I consider that a great value in today's market: an excellent result orientation.
Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?
I don't really find that there is an area of improvement, at least in our overall experience. They met all the objectives of the project as agreed.

Please describe your company and your position there.
I was the CTO of Argentine smiles for 2 years
For what projects/services did your company hire Asamblo, and what were your goals?
We hired ASAMBLO to develop a web application that allows us to streamline our business model. We had an old system that did not guarantee the correct functioning of all our business areas. The objective was to develop an application that allows us to scale the business as we need to create new branches
How did you select Asamblo and what were the deciding factors?
We chose to work with asamblo, thanks to the fact that they have a team of young functional analysts with great capacity to understand the operations of a dental company.
Describe the scope of work in detail, including the project steps, key deliverables, and technologies used.
We worked for 2 months with mockups that arose from numerous interactions and meetings between us and the analysts. Then we were establishing priorities that the business demanded. And scheduling updates throughout the 2 years that the project lasted.
How many people from the vendor's team worked with you, and what were their positions?
I and 2 functional analysts work in the first 2 months. Then I continued together with the asamblo functional analysts for the remaining time of the project.
Can you share any measurable outcomes of the project or general feedback about the deliverables?
As the updates were deployed to production, we reached 100% in a few days of corrections
Describe their project management style, including communication tools and timelines.
The communications were recurring every day, even after hours, via whatsapp, skype, phone, and project applications like trello.
What did you find most impressive or unique about this company?
The ability of your functional analysts to easily interpret what the business requires was impressive.
Are there any areas for improvement or something they could have done differently?
In the effort to provide quick solutions, using various communication methods can be confusing.

A Clutch analyst personally interviewed this client over the phone. Below is an edited transcript.
Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m the CTO of Baluwo. We’re a small startup with a development department of four people. Our aim is to offer African immigrants an alternative to sending money to relatives at home by buying them services and goods through our platform.
What challenge were you trying to address with asamblo?
We had an existing Android app and were looking to create a new version for Android and iOS. We didn’t have the resources to do it in-house, so we hired asamblo.
What was the scope of their involvement?
asamblo took the main code and documentation from our existing application and rebuilt it in React Native.
What is the team composition?
We worked with three people from asamblo. I talked a lot with Luciano (President & Co-Founder) and with one of the two developers.
How did you come to work with asamblo?
They contacted our CEO through LinkedIn, looking for new business. We were looking to start this project at the time and I contacted asamblo along with 2–3 other companies. I’m from Argentina as well, and I’ve worked as a freelancer there. I contacted a company I used to work for, but they were too expensive. It came down to a local company in Spain, which had a better price, and asamblo. I felt comfortable talking to Luciano, so I chose them. I have no regrets about it.
How much have you invested with them?
The cost of their work was around €8,000 ($9,300 USD).
What is the status of this engagement?
They gave us a proposal in July 2019, and we started the project in mid-to-late-August of that year. They delivered the work in December 2019, and we continued working on it with our own resources after that.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
They were really proactive in asking for clarifications for the documentation we provided, and in researching and replicating the old code. They finished every sprint perfectly on time. The only delay was caused by some issues we faced publishing the iOS app. I’d recommend asamblo to anyone. They’re serious, hardworking, and great communicators.
How did asamblo perform from a project management standpoint?
I was responsible for following the project from our side, and I talked to Luciano most of the time. We agreed to a standard workflow and they always delivered successfully. We didn’t need to use project management tools. They sent us code every two weeks. We use Slack internally, and I created a channel for asamblo there. We chatted there daily and used email outside of working hours. We were working across different time zones.
What did you find most impressive about them?
They’re proactive and strive to solve all the problems they’re presented with.
Are there any areas they could improve?
I’m sure there are improvement points, but I can’t think of anything right now.
Do you have any advice for future clients of theirs?
I have no advice in particular. Clients should just tell asamblo what they need. I’ve worked as a freelancer, and I’ve recommended asamblo to one of my former clients.

Introduce your business and what you do there.
I’m the CEO of Dr. Contact Lens. It is a contact lens ordering platform, allowing patients to order directly from their doctor’s office.
What challenge were you trying to address with Asamblo?
We wanted to make it possible for patients to order contacts online while they are still at their doctor’s office.
What was the scope of their involvement?
Asamblo built the entire software from the ground up, developing various features for the company. To make it a reality, they first did an integration with three electronic medical records. Next, they crafted an integration with two distributors for contact lenses.
The team also built an API on the company’s end and connected it with another system. After that, they placed all the deliverables on an entire web-based app, allowing the company to manage everything there and to connect with doctors. Other features and functionalities including the integration of credit card processing were also conducted by them.
Basically, when a doctor puts in a patient’s prescription, we pull that data into our system. Subsequently, patients can log in, order contacts, and get notified when it’s time to reorder.
What is the team composition?
We are working with four people from Asamblo's team.
How did you come to work with Asamblo?
Our CTO found Asamblo through his connections. For the first year, he worked with them directly and as things stabilized, I joined in the collaboration.
How much have you invested with them?
So far, we’ve already spent $250,000 on the project.
What is the status of this engagement?
We began working together around January 2018 and it’s ongoing.
What evidence can you share that demonstrates the impact of the engagement?
We have seen exponential growth in our company. We were able to expand from 30 locations to 120 locations since March 2020. They work hard and fast. The team is a breath of fresh air compared to others we worked with previously.
How did Asamblo perform from a project management standpoint?
They are always responsive and meet deadlines. It is incredible to work with Asamblo. They always answer calls and emails, and quickly fix issues that come up. We mainly use GitLab for issues and communicate via Skype, WhatsApp, and email.
What did you find most impressive about them?
They heard us, grasped our vision, and works hard to make our goals a reality. We are able to scale quickly because of how they prepared us in the backend. Moreover, they’re also not easily frustrated, especially with programming, which makes it nicer to work with them.
Are there any areas they could improve?
I have no suggestions for improvement. I’ve been extremely happy with them.
Do you have any advice for potential customers?
Start with the end in mind so you can try to predict growth and where it needs to go.
